A series of oral history interviews with community members who were involved with the Irish Names Project.
Commissioned in 2021 by Queer Culture Ireland, with support from EPIC Museum and GCN (Gay Community News). Interviews were conducted by Judith Finlay and Han Tiernan.
Presented as part of GCN’s In & Out programme, with support from EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and Queer Culture Ireland, Han Tiernan and Judith Finlay, co-founder of Queer Culture Ireland, discussed the origins of the Irish Names Project and the AIDS memorial quilts. The programme also included excerpts from interviews with people involved in creating the project and HIV/AIDS activism.
Judith Finlay and Han Tiernan spoke to the family of Mary Shannon, founder of the Irish Names Project and the Irish AIDS memorial quilts. The interviewees include Christy Shannon, Mary’s husband, Phil Hughes, Mary’s sister, Trish Conway, Mary’s friend and Ryan Shannon, Mary’s son.
Judith Finlay and Han Tiernan spoke to Karl Hayden, LGBTQ+ and trade union activist. Karl was involved with the Dublin AIDS Alliance in the early 90s.
